Operating systems that run via emulation on the Vampire

Many operating systems never released a version that was compatible with Amiga hardware. Some of these operating systems can still be made to run on an Amiga, by using specific software that emulates the intended hardware for those operating systems. Thanks to the unprecedented speed of the Vampire, these operating systems run pretty well, even with the overhead added by the emulation layer.

Classic Mac OS

Mac OS versions intended to run on 68k Macs (i.e. Mac OS versions from 7.1 to 8.1) can be run with a Macintosh emulator like ShapeShifter. (See the “Tips” section in this page for compatibility considerations for Macintosh emulators.)

Because the Amiga / Vampire already contains the intended CPU (68k), the CPU does not need to be emulated. This drastically reduces the overhead added by the emulation layer. In fact, thanks to the speed of the Vampire, you can run classic Mac OS much faster than the fastest 68k Mac! You can get an incredible Mac OS experience.

Please see “68k Macintosh” on this page for more details about the Macintosh software library.

MS-DOS, DR-DOS, FreeDOS

These can be run with the PC emulators PC-Task, PCx or DOSBox. The experience is very smooth, comparable to running on an early Pentium processor.

Please see “x86 PC” on this page for more details about the PC software library.

Windows 3.x

This can be run with the PC emulators PC-Task, PCx or DOSBox. Thanks to the speed of the Vampire, the experience is very smooth, comparable to running on an early Pentium processor.

For even better performance, you can first emulate a classic Mac OS (like described above) and then run SoftWindows 1.0 on top of Mac OS. SoftWindows is a PC emulator that is heavily optimized for Windows 3.1.

Please see “x86 PC” on this page for more details about the PC software library.

Windows 95, Windows 98

These can be run with the PC emulators PC-Task or PCx.

The experience is comparable to running on an early Pentium processor. Windows 95 runs at an acceptable speed. Windows 98 runs at a slow speed.

Please see “x86 PC” on this page for more details about the PC software library.

OS/2

This can be run with the PC emulator PCx.

Please see “x86 PC” on this page for more details about the PC software library.

RISC OS

RISC OS 3.1x can be run with the Acorn Archimedes emulator ArcEm.

CP/M

CP/M-80 can be run with the following emulators:
