EmuTOS on the Vampire
EmuTOS is an open-source re-implementation of Atari TOS. It is binary-compatible to Atari programs written for TOS. It contains many enhancements compared to the original TOS, and is being actively developed. Furthermore, it has been optimized for the Vampire.
EmuTOS can be run on the Amiga by booting it from a floppy disk, or by using it as a Kickstart ROM replacement. You can download the desired EmuTOS version from this page. (The archive name should start with “emutos-amiga-”.)
Please see Installing Kickstarts for using an EmuTOS ROM as a Kickstart replacement on the Vampire.
- In a Vampire accelerator board connected to a classic Amiga, the Core already contains an EmuTOS ROM, in addition to the Amiga Kickstart ROM. If you hold down the joystick fire button during power-on, the Vampire will start the Core's EmuTOS instead of the Amiga Kickstart.
On starting, EmuTOS will scan and mount all Atari-compatible partitions on IDE storage devices and SD cards, and will launch the GEM desktop environment. System-friendly Atari TOS software should run well. If a program bypasses the operating system to obtain access to the Atari hardware, it will fail. To run such programs, you need an Atari emulator like the ones listed on this page.
EmuTOS can be used as a stub to run FreeMiNT, a much more powerful Atari operating system that can run modern Atari software.
